With The Other Animals
Being human is to be an animal, and yet we see ourselves differently to the other animals. We live in an age categorised by the moralistic and environmental consequences of our influences on these other animals.

The performance of being a human animal.

We insist we are more and settle for less.

Our bodies remember the fear.

You can try to silence it, but it comes regardless,

like panic attacks in the supermarket.

The animal doesn’t go away, even if we don’t hunt.

It just learns table manners.

Civilisation is a long-run experiment in denial

for those who have a short memory of the time before.

At least we aren’t in a cave, we say,

as we walk back into our offices,

or peasants, who worked fewer hours and slept more.

We draw lines, famously, religiously, tragically.

We divide the world into categories:

clean and unclean,

pet and pests,

us and the rest.

We pretend the lines mean something more than convenience.

We curate compassion the way we curate playlists:

selective, mood-dependent, easily skipped.

Inside, we domesticate.

Outside, we dominate.

That’s the arrangement.

And what we can’t cuddle or eat?

The rare ones, the almost-gone ones,

we lift them onto pedestals.

We mourn them in advance.

Extinction becomes an aesthetic.

We love them best at the edge of absence.

We forget, or maybe never learned,

that animals don’t exist to be our metaphors.

The wolf doesn’t howl for our loneliness.

They are honest to a fault, which unsettles us.

We, the clever architects of our own undoing,

begin to feel the old animal in us stirring.

Our bodies remember the fear

that brings us back to the basics: hunger,

but for what?

<img
