You said once that life was just a series of bargains.<\/p>

And I laughed, didn\u2019t I? Thought it cynical.<\/p>

But you knew better. You always knew better.<\/p>

Even now, I hear you, dead but loquacious, as you made your last and most impossible bargain.<\/p>

Not divine, not demonic, but deciduous.<\/p>

Nature, the grandmother of all things, with dirt beneath her nails and no time for sentiment.<\/p>

You asked her\u2014not begged, you never begged, to let you come back.<\/p>

Briefly. Bloom, you said. You always did know your verbs. Let me bloom.<\/p>

And she\u2014pragmatic, unruffled\u2014gave you that terrible mercy.<\/p>

Gave you stem and pigment and the borrowed time of blossoms.<\/p>

And I? I was left with you again. Kind of.<\/p>

You sat on my windowsill. I know it was you.<\/p>

But you were slipping, even then. I knew you fell to pieces.<\/p>

One petal after another, and then you were gone again, as you always do,<\/p>

with exquisite timing and not quite enough warning.<\/p>

And now I write this\u2014no address, no stamp, no reasonable explanation\u2014because what else is there to do?<\/p>

You were always the better writer. You could wrestle pauses into stories.<\/p>

You made death look like a place where margins waited to be scribbled in.<\/p>

So here I am, scribbling. Revising.<\/p>

Here\u2019s the new story:<\/p>

You were gone before I woke.<\/p>

You were here. Then a flower. Then not.<\/p>

Love you always,<\/p>

P.S. There was a petal in my shoe this morning.<\/p>
