swimming in open waters,<\/p>
of what lurks beneath,<\/p>
But it isn\u2019t the dark<\/p>
that frightens us,<\/p>
but the certainty of our reflection within it.<\/p>
We call it light, but it\u2019s really a kind of forgiveness<\/p>
for all the things we never quite became:<\/p>
the things we tried to drown in daylight,<\/p>
the versions of ourselves we only meet<\/p>
in the honest hours,<\/p>
when we should be asleep.<\/p>
There\u2019s a strange democracy in the dark,<\/p>
listening to the kettle begin its faithful warble.<\/p>
So we keep a night light on,<\/p>
not to see,<\/p>
but to believe,<\/p>
to let someone, somewhere, know<\/p>
that we are still burning a light for them.<\/p>
