A late-night light show<\/p>

boomed against the walls<\/p>

My evacuation into the<\/p>

crowded streets meant<\/p>

being swallowed<\/p>

by the peer pressure.<\/p>

I watched a man\u2019s perfectionism:<\/p>

moving the same pallet an inch<\/p>

and then stepping back<\/p>

after each adjustment,<\/p>

the architect of this controlled chaos.<\/p>

Us, the fans of the fire, burning too.<\/p>

Two boys argued over whose turn<\/p>

it was to hold and to light the sparkler,<\/p>

descending into who was<\/p>

taller,<\/p>

bigger,<\/p>

stronger;<\/p>

and neither<\/p>

of them lit anything,<\/p>

the sparkler taken<\/p>

from them both<\/p>

by their chastising mother.<\/p>

Seeing her finger waggle,<\/p>

I felt myself standing straighter,<\/p>

thinking the fire makes us all children.<\/p>
